In Alabama, a bill of sale is not always required by the Department of Revenue (DOR) for vehicles. It is, however, imperative when you are selling a vehicle and there is no title available. If there is a title, you will be able to reassign ownership on the title itself.

The DOR has provided an Unclaimed/Abandoned vehicle portal for this purpose: https://unclaimed.mvtrip.alabama.gov/. The Unclaimed/Abandoned portal must be used to complete the following process to report a vehicle as unclaimed and sell the vehicle as an abandoned vehicle.

Can I Sell A Car In Alabama Without A Title? The Alabama DMV requires a title to sell a vehicle that was manufactured later than 1975. If your title is lost, duplicate titles can be obtained from the Alabama DMV.

The abandoned vehicle bill of sale will be generated from the Unclaimed/Abandoned portal and will be used to apply for the Alabama certificate of title. All research documents, legal newspaper ads, certified mail receipts etc, must be kept by the seller for 3 consecutive years after the sale of the abandoned vehicle.

The State of Alabama now requires all vehicles within five (5) calendar days from the date the vehicle was first considered unclaimed by the person or entity in possession of a motor vehicle, the vehicle must be reported as unclaimed to the DOR through the Unclaimed/Abandoned portal.

Trace your vehicle online (external link) Text 'TRACE' followed by your Vehicle Registration Mark (registration number) to 66663 - you may be charged for this service. Call the TRACE Customer Services Helpdesk - tel: 0845 206 8602.

If a title is not required, bring a bill of sale with itemized tax information, and you will be issued a registration only. If the vehicle was purchased from a dealer in another state, a dealer's affidavit is required for registration, along with a VIN/Ownership Documentation inspection.
