Schedule III and IV controlled substances cannot be filled or refilled more than 5 times or more than 6 months after the date the prescription was issued, whichever occurs first. Schedule II prescriptions cannot be refilled.

In an automatic refill program, prescriptions are likely initiated sooner for processing compared to manual refill prescriptions. However, an automatic prescription refill program only addresses initiation of the refilling and does not directly address the patient picking up the prescription.

This feature allows patients to set their maintenance prescriptions to refill automatically on a date they choose, based on their prescribed dosage regimen. Patients can choose to have their prescriptions filled for pickup at the store or for home delivery by mail.

Schedule II medications may not be refilled; a new prescription must be written every time. Medications classified as Schedule III or IV controlled substances may be refilled up to 5 times in a 6-month period. Schedule V medications may be refilled as authorized by the prescriber.

Under federal law, prescriptions for Schedule II substances cannot be refilled. Prescriptions for Schedule III and IV controlled substances can be refilled up to five times in six months, and prescriptions for Schedule V controlled substances can be refilled as authorized by the practitioner.

Call your doctor and ask if they will write you a medication order (a paper copy of your prescriptions) to take with you on your trip. Then, you'll be able to take the prescription(s) to any pharmacy and fill your Rx.

We allow a controlled substance to be filled 2 days early, and that's it. The only exceptions are for legitimate purposes and occasional situations.
