From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Continuing medical education (CME) refers to a specific form of continuing education (CE) that helps those in the medical field maintain competence and learn about new and developing areas of their field.

CME facilitates innovation and improves patient outcomes.CME is recognized as an essential part of continued professional development for physicians and a key resource in ensuring both the quality and effectiveness of health care delivery.

California law requires that general internists and family physicians who have a patient population of which over 25 percent are 65 years of age or older, complete at least 20 percent of their mandatory CME in the field of geriatric medicine.

Develop online course. Develop budget. Apply for continuing education credits i.e., CME and Nursing. Develop program evaluation. Summarize program evaluations and provide copy to conference director. Develop program brochure. Handle printing/copying of brochure. Order mailing labels.

Be accredited by either the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) or a recognized state medical society (SMS). Meet all requirements of both the AMA and their accreditor (ACCME or SMS).

Under California law, physicians and surgeons must complete at least 50 hours of approved CME during each biennial renewal cycle. Most California-licensed physicians are required to take, as a one-time requirement, 12 hours of CME on pain management and the appropriate care and treatment of the terminally ill.

Continuing medical education (CME) planning committees and departments must evaluate the effectiveness of each activity and use data from those evaluations to plan future activities. The information gathered should question whether or not attendees felt that the objectives were met.
