Pulpotomy restores and saves the tooth infected by a deep cavity. Deep cavity must be treated to avoid the spreading of inflammation and infection that can cause abscess tooth. Pulpectomy, on the other hand, is similar to a root canal. The dentist removes all the pulp from the damage teeth from the crown to the roots.

If the decay or trauma is confined to the crown of the tooth, a pulpotomy may be recommended. When a cavity gets really deep, close to the pulp of a tooth, or even into the pulp, the pulpal tissue becomes irritated and inflamed. A pulpotomy is when the inflamed pulp chamber, usually on a baby molar, is removed.

Indications: A partial pulpotomy is indicated in a young permanent tooth for a carious pulp exposure in which the pulpal bleeding is controlled within several minutes. The tooth must be vital, with a diagnosis of normal pulp or reversible pulpitis.

Risks and Contraindications Pulpotomies should not be performed if the pulp in the root (the radicular pulp) is not vital. That means that the pulp there should not be infected and should still be healthy at the time of the procedure.

This procedure is most notably performed on children who still have their baby teeth and whose tooth roots have not yet fully matured. Subsequently, a pulpotomy is often referred to as a “baby root canal.”

Formocresol (FC) is considered the gold standard dressing agent for pulpotomy, but concerns have been raised over the years about its safety.

A pulpotomy is more invasive than a standard filling, but a root canal is far more invasive than a pulpotomy. With a pulpotomy, only the top most pulp is removed. With a root canal, all the tooth's pulp must be removed, including the roots, before filling and sealing.
