The New Jersey Hospital Care Payment Assistance Program (Charity Care) is available to patients for inpatient and outpatient services at all acute care hospitals throughout New Jersey. Medically necessary services may be eligible for patients who meet income and asset criteria.

Charity Care covers medically necessary treatment. This includes inpatient hospital stays and emergency room visits. Some hospitals have a different name for their Charity Care programs, such as Bridge Assistance or Financial Assistance.

Hospitals do get help with the unpaid bills from taxpayers. The majority of hospitals are non-profits and are exempt from federal, state and local taxes if they provide a community benefit, such as charitable care. Hospitals also receive federal funding to offset some of the costs of treating the poor.

In accordance with Charity Care guidelines, payment assistance is available to New Jersey resident patients whose household gross income is at or below 300% of the federal poverty guidelines and who: Have no health coverage or have coverage that pays only for part of the bill; and.

You can apply online through www.njfamilycare.org or www.njhelps.org. You can download an application for NJ FamilyCare/Medicaid from www.njfamilycare.org or call 1-800-701-0710 to request that an application be mailed to you. You can apply at your local County Board of Social Services.

The scheme provides free health care to uninsured state residents whose income is up to 200% of the federally designated poverty line, and provides discounts which gradually phase out at incomes between 200% and 300% of the poverty line; the patient's liquid assets (not including the patient's home and one automobile) ...

Overall, average total charity care was $4.3 million for for-profit hospitals and $7.1 million for nonprofit hospitals, with the mean for charity care as percent of total expenses being 2.6 percent for for-profit hospitals and 2.9 percent for nonprofit hospitals.

Charity care is free or discounted medically necessary health care that many hospitals offer to people who cannot afford to pay for treatment otherwise. ... Patients can apply and/or obtain an application for Charity Care either on-line or by calling the financial counseling office at 201-833-3157 to schedule an appointment. Office hours are Monday through Friday between 8:30am to 2:30pm.

Pay stubs. Income tax returns from the past year. W-2 statements from your employer. Social Security or Unemployment income statements. DSHS documents, including medical coupons and/or approval for cash benefits.
