The TOEFL and the IELTS are two common tests to evaluate student ability to use English in an academic or professional context. Universities and employers often use these tests to determine language proficiency levels. Both the TOEFL and IELTS have four main components: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

There are three very well known language proficiency scales used around the world: the ACTFL scale, the CEFR scale, and the ILR scale. Each scale measures linguistic abilities on various levels to reflect an individual's ability to communicate effectively in a target language.

The CA ELD Standards define three proficiency levels—Emerging, Expanding, and Bridging*—to describe the stages of English language development through which ELs are expected to progress as they improve their abilities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English.

The ELPAC is California's assessment that is used to determine the English proficiency of students whose primary language is any language other than English. The ELPAC assesses students in four domains: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

The English Language Assessment tests your natural language abilities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Assessments are computer-based tests that could take anywhere from 20 minutes to 3 hours to complete, depending on the individual student and the number of tests required.

Alternate English language proficiency assessments are assessments of English language proficiency (ELP) based on alternate achievement standards (often referred to as Alt-ELP).
