Worms can be divided into three main groups - flatworms, segmented worms and roundworms, most of which have a long, soft body with no true legs.

Flatworms (phylum Platyhelminthes) are simple animals that are slightly more complex than a cnidarian. Roundworms (phylum Nematoda) have a slightly more complex body plan. Segmented worms (phylum Annelida) are the most complex animals with worm-like body plans.

They have five paired organs that act like hearts to pump their blood through large blood vessels. They have a brain and nerve cord. They have reproductive organs and waste-removal organs. Well-developed muscles let the worms crawl through the soil or on top of the ground.

The main characteristic features of an earthworm are: Long, cylindrical and segmented body. It is a hermaphrodite, having both male and female sex organs. It has a hydrostatic skeleton. It has a central and peripheral nervous system. The setae present in the epidermal pits help in locomotion.

The flatworms are acoelomates and do not have any coelom or cavity in their body whereas the roundworms have pseudo coelom also known as the false coelom and hence are known as pseudocoelomates and the segmented worms have true coelom and hence are known as coelomates.

All worms are bilaterally symmetrical, meaning that the two sides of their bodies are identical. They lack scales and true limbs, though they may have appendages such as fins and bristles. Many worms have sense organs to detect chemical changes in their environments, and some have light-sensing organs.

An earthworm has a streamlined body with no antennae or fins or arms or legs! This streamlined shape is an adaptation to living in narrow burrows underground and the need to move easily through the soil. An earthworm has circular muscles that surround each body segment.

Worms are invertebrate animals with bilateral symmetry. Worms have a definite anterior (head) end and a posterior (tail) end. The ventral surface of worms and other organisms is the bottom side of the body, often closest to the ground. The dorsal surface is located on the upper part of the body facing the sky.
