Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program Our goal is to prevent the perinatal transmission of hepatitis B by promoting the following: Prenatal testing of all pregnant women for hepatitis B infection and reporting cases to local health departments.

Prophylaxis consists of hepatitis B vaccine along with hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG). Hepatitis B vaccine alone starting at birth will prevent transmission of the virus in 70%–95% of infants born to chronically infected mothers.

The Texas Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program aims to: Ensure that all pregnant women are tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). Ensure reporting and tracking of HBsAg-positive pregnant women. Ensure that delivery facilities/hospitals receive all prenatal HBsAg lab reports prior to delivery.

The 6-in-1 vaccine offered to all babies when they are 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age includes a vaccine against hepatitis B. Babies at risk of developing hepatitis B infection from infected mothers are given extra doses of the hepatitis B vaccine at birth, 4 weeks and 1 year of age.

Perinatal HBV transmission can be prevented by identifying HBV-infected (i.e., hepatitis B surface antigen [HBsAg]-positive) pregnant women and providing hepatitis B immune globulin and hepatitis B vaccine to their infants within 12 hours of birth.

One way to transmit hepatitis B virus (HBV) is from mother to infant during birth (perinatal transmission). The risk of perinatal HBV infection among infants born to mothers already infected with HBV ranges from 10% to 85%.

Infants should receive HBIG immediately after birth — preferably within 12 hours of birth and certainly within 48 hours. Its efficacy decreases markedly if given more than 48 hours after birth. Give the dose of monovalent hepatitis B vaccine preferably within 24 hours of birth, and definitely within 7 days.

Perinatal HBV transmission can be prevented by identifying HBV-infected (i.e., hepatitis B surface antigen [HBsAg]-positive) pregnant women and providing hepatitis B immune globulin and hepatitis B vaccine to their infants within 12 hours of birth.
