The Programming merit badge website, http://www. boyslife.org/programming, has a number of sample programs that you could use for requirement 5a. However, you have the option of finding a program on your own. It's a good idea to seek your merit badge counselor's guidance.

Read a nonfiction book or magazine that teaches you how to do something like cooking, wood-building projects, video game design, science experiments, knot-tying, etc. With your counselor's and parent's or guardian's permission, complete a project from the book. Share your experience with your merit badge counselor.

Only one, however, would serve toward the required merit badges for the Eagle Scout rank. The other two would count toward the optional merit badges required to make up the total of 21 merit badges. Note that Star and Life requirements each allow two non-Eagle-required merit badges.

And effective with Eagle boards of review held on or after May 1, 2021, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion merit badge will be required to earn the rank. It'll become the 14th Eagle-required merit badge, displacing one of the electives. Education in diversity and inclusion isn't just for the Scouts.

While working on the requirements for the Law merit badge, Scouts learn about the history of law and the difference between civil law and criminal law. They investigate the different areas of law and find out about careers which are related to legal matters.

Eagle Scouts must complete a minimum of 21 merit badges. That may seem like a lot, but it's just 10 more badges than a Life Scout already has, and chances are, your son has already completed many of the badges on the required list. Your child's list of badges must include these 13 very specific topics.

Snow Sports is very difficult if you're a scout living in Hawaii. Gardening is difficult if you don't have access to a garden. Aviation is difficult if you don't have access to a flight simulator. Horsemanship is difficult if you don't have a horse. Bugling is pretty tricky for people that can't play brass instruments.
