Macbeth is, for the most part, written in blank verse. The basic unit of blank verse is a line in iambic pentameter without a rhyme scheme but, increasingly in his plays, Shakespeare's use of the line and the number of its syllables and stresses became freer.

The witches symbolize the supernatural in Macbeth. They are also figures that call into question the nature of free will because of the prophecies that they give to Macbeth, which may ultimately impact his actions.

This is blank verse and is the poetic medium in which most of the play is written. 'Your face, my thane, is as a book where men May read strange matters. To beguile the time' (I. 5.60–1).

Particularly in the first two Acts, Lady Macbeth's speech had been fiery blank verse – the strong rhythms reflecting her strong, determined grasp of reality.

By the time he wrote Romeo and Juliet in 1597, the majority of the play was in blank verse. Shakespeare used other types of writing, such as rhyming iambic pentameter and prose, to contrast characters' personalities and social class. Blank verse often represented the higher or more noble in the contrast.

Symbols in Macbeth include: sleep, blood, weather, visions and hallucinations, light and darkness, and daggers. Symbols are used to create deeper meaning and understanding of the characters' ambitions.

Lady Macbeth reads her husband's letter about his meeting the witches. She fears that Macbeth lacks the ruthlessness he needs to kill Duncan and fulfill the witches' second prophecy. When she learns that Duncan is coming to visit, she calls upon supernatural agents to fill her with cruelty.

The blood on Macbeth's hands symbolizes the guilt he feels for murdering Duncan. Lady Macbeth speaks these words at the end of the play, wandering around the castle in a delirium trying to wash out an invisible bloodstain, a symbol of her guilt.

Gold: The gold color represents the color of MacBeth crown. MacBeth had to kill for the crown and to be king so the gold color is a big part of him. The gold crown became something that MacBeth had to commit so many crimes to be able to keep and became very valuable to him so the gold color represents MacBeth.

These lines from Hamlet are written in blank verse (note the lack of rhyme and the consistent meter of unstressed/stressed syllables): "It is not nor it cannot come to good, / But break, my heart, for I must hold my tongue."
