The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the main scheme for monitoring the population changes of the UK's common breeding birds. It is a national volunteer project aimed at keeping track of changes in the breeding populations of widespread bird species in the UK.

This method involves mapping the location and species of all birds on site using standard symbols. The site is visited on 5 to 10 occasions from the 15th March to 15th July with the location, species and behaviour of birds encountered recorded on a map of the area.

A breeding bird survey monitors the status and trends of bird populations. Data from the survey are an important source for the range maps found in field guides. The North American Breeding Bird Survey is a joint project of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Canadian Wildlife Service.

This will be carried out by a suitably experienced ecologist, to identify active nests and advise on any areas where works should not commence until young birds have fledged. Each nesting bird check is valid for a period of five days.

Visits should ideally start between 6 am and 7 am, and no later than 9 am. Try to avoid the period of peak bird activity around dawn, and the period of lower activity from late morning onwards (though start times can be later in less accessible areas).

The roadside survey methodology was field tested during 1965, and the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) was formally launched in 1966 when approximately 600 surveys were conducted in the U.S. and Canada east of the Mississippi River. The survey spread to the Great Plains states and prairie provinces in 1967.

The BBS is a long-term, large-scale, international avian monitoring program initiated in 1966 to track the status and trends of North American bird populations. The USGS Eastern Ecological Science Center and Environment Canada's Canadian Wildlife Service jointly coordinate the BBS program.

How Does the Breeding Bird Survey Work? Each year during the height of the avian breeding season, thousands of community scientists who are skilled in avian identification collect bird population data from roadside survey routes. Survey routes are roughly 25 miles long and are comprised of 50 point counts.
