While midwives provide pregnancy, birth and postpartum care, they can also provide annual exams, educational support, birth control, sexually transmitted infection (STI) screenings and more. This means you can see a midwife through many stages of your life.

Seeing a midwife or health visitor If you've given birth in hospital or a midwife unit and you and your baby are well, you'll probably be able to go home 6 to 24 hours after your baby is born. Midwives will agree a plan with you for visits at home or at a children's centre until your baby is at least 10 days old.

Your midwife will visit you in hospital and/or at home and complete the physical checks for you and baby, assist with feeding and also provide emotional support. If you are having problems breast feeding, we can put together an intensive breast feeding support package for you.

When you first see your midwife, she'll ask you about your baby. She'll want to discuss how often you're breastfeeding or formula-feeding, and how you feel it's going. She will also check: whether your baby's umbilical cord stump has fallen off, and how the area's healing.
