Conceptual change learning results in better conceptual understanding by the students. Consistent evaluation and clarification of conceptions helps students develop metaconceptual awareness; that is, they come to understand how they develop their beliefs (Vosniadou, 1994).

Conceptual change is a special type of learning that takes place when individuals change their knowledge from naïve, conflicting, and misconceived (referred to as misconceptions) to more scientifically-accepted knowledge (Chi et al., 1994; Vosniadou, 2004).

Conceptual change is the process whereby concepts and relationships between them change over the course of an individual person's lifetime or over the course of history.

Conceptual change is generally defined as learning that changes an existing conception (i.e., belief, idea, or way of thinking). In the preceding scenario, Heather experiences conceptual change in her understanding of the cause of seasons.

In order to understand the difference between incorrect knowledge and misconceived/conflicting knowledge, we need to consider the representation of knowledge at three different grain sizes: individual beliefs, mental models, and categories.

The process of replacing a misconception with a scientifically acceptable concept is called "conceptual change". Steadfastly students hold on to their own ideas about the way the world works, may be very reluctant to change these ideas, and may be little influenced by instruction with a contrary perspective.

Conceptual change is based on the idea that new knowledge is built on top of existing knowledge. In other words, an individual who learns something new is not a blank slate. New knowledge is always created through changing existing knowledge in one way or another (cf., e.g., Hewson 1992; Thagard 1992).

Three types of conceptual change: Belief revision, mental model transformation, and categorical shift.
