A tarp is one of the most valuable and versatile survival tools in a backpacker's inventory. Read on to learn some tarp-hanging techniques and alternative survival applications for this piece of equipment.

How to Put Up a Camp Tarp 1- Select Location. Locate a couple of trees the right distance apart with basically level ground in between them. ... 2-Wrap the Rope. Walk the rope around the tree tightly, two to three times. 3-Anchor the rope. ... 4- Check it. ... 5- Other Tree. ... 6-Position Tarp. ... 7- Secure Tarp to Rope. ... 8- Secure Other Tree.

Tie a cord to one of the corner tie down loops. Lie the tarp flat on the ground where you want it and peg out the other three corners. Raise the fourth corner using your trekking pole. Insert the pole tip into the rig point and tension by pegging out the cord that you tied on earlier.

Long tarp my tent is right in the middle the rain really does not have a chance to get to it so get a big tarp got plenty of par.

An 8-by-10 foot tarp can provide full coverage for up to two people; a 6-by-8 foot version provides adequate protection for only one. Grommets or tie-out loops on the tarp's corners and along its edges are a common—and essential—feature for an easy and taut pitch.

Lay your tarp flat with the long edge in front of you. Stake out the left corners and the midpoint of the front edge. Grab the back-right edge and pull the tarp over itself. Wrap and tie your trekking pole under the midpoint of the new top edge and stake it out in front of the front-left corner.

Attach each pole firmly to a grommet with a piece of rope. With some helpers, lift the poles to a standing position with the tarp forming a roof. Now, attach a rope to the top of one of the corner poles. Run the rope away from the tarp, attach it to one of your tent stakes and hammer the stake into the ground.

I would use 5' poles at the four corners and an 8' pole for the center support. Be sure to V stake the poles out. This pic shows a tarp corner supported with an 8' pole but I always hang my tarp on a continuous ridgeline so now I just bring two or three 5' poles in case trees aren't in the right place.
