Schedule C is part of Form 1040. It's used by sole proprietors to let the IRS know how much their business made or lost in the last year. The IRS uses the information in Schedule C to calculate how much taxable profit you made and assess any taxes or refunds owing.

Form 1040-SR can be filed electronically, just as Form 1040 can.

The simplest IRS form is the Form 1040EZ. The 1040A covers several additional items not addressed by the EZ. And finally, the IRS Form 1040 should be used when itemizing deductions and reporting more complex investments and other income.

Form 1040-SR is available as an optional alternative to using Form 1040 for taxpayers who are age 65 or older. Form 1040-SR uses the same schedules and instructions as Form 1040 does.

The standard deduction chart on Form 1040-SR is useful for seniors because it lists the bigger standard deductions people 65 and older are eligible to claim. Plus, it's in an easier-to-read format. The regular 1040 lists only the standard deductions non-seniors can claim in smaller text.

Schedule C will calculate your net business income or loss after you add in all of your income and subtract all of your expenses. You must report this number on line 12 of Schedule 1, "Additional Income and Adjustments to Income." Schedule 1 accompanies your Form 1040 tax return.

Step 1: Gather Information. Step 2: Calculate Gross Profit and Income. Step 3: Include Your Business Expenses. Step 4: Include Other Expenses and Information. Step 5: Calculate Your Net Income. And If You Have a Business Loss.

The standard deduction for 2020 is $12,400 for singles and $24,800 for married joint filers. There is also an "additional standard deduction," for older taxpayers and those who are blind. ... Single filers who are blind or over 65 are eligible for a $1,650 additional standard deduction. This is up $50 from 2019.

Form 1040-SR simplifies tax-filing requirements for seniors and is much easier to complete than the much longer Form 1040 and the now-defunct Forms 1040-EZ and 1040-A.

Use Schedule C (Form 1040 or 1040-SR) to report income or loss from a business you operated or a profession you practiced as a sole proprietor. An activity qualifies as a business if: Your primary purpose for engaging in the activity is for income or profit.
