A Returning Resident Visa or an SB-1 visa is a type of visa used by conditional residents in the United States to reenter the country after they've been away from the country for a considerable amount of time. The amount of time they stay outside is usually more than what is allowed.

How long does it take? If you have permanent resident status and file from inside Australia the DHA will aim to process your application within 1 business day. If you file from outside Australia the processing time will be approximately two weeks.

You can voluntarily relinquish your permanent resident status. You will need to sign a form confirming your desire to relinquish your status (Form I-407) and surrender your green card.

An I-407 form allows a legal permanent resident to officially abandon their status. You would need to submit it to USCIS by mail, along with your actual green card (but no fee). See the instructions and form on the USCIS website.

The SB-1 visa processing time depends on the workload of the U.S Embassy where you are applying from. In general however, it take 3 to 6 months for your application to be completed and for them to notify you whether you have gotten the SB-1 visa or not.
