Excel 2007+2010: Choose Find & Select in the Editing group on the Home tab, and then select Replace (or press Ctrl+H). In this case, to remove all before the > character, just search for "*> " (without the quotes) and replace with nothing. Then all characters before "> " are removed.

In order to remove the first character from a string in R, there is a built-in command sub() . Here, "old_value" refers to the character we are interested in replacing; "new_value" is what we will be replacing the "old_value" with; and "string" is the text object we will be working with.

1. Combine RIGHT and LEN to Remove the First Character from the Value. Using a combination of RIGHT and LEN is the most suitable way to remove the first character from a cell or from a text string. This formula simply skips the first character from the text provided and returns the rest of the characters.

To get text following a specific character, you use slightly different approach: get the position of the character with either SEARCH or FIND, subtract that number from the total string length returned by the LEN function, and extract that many characters from the end of the string.

=REPLACE(Text, 1, N, ) =RIGHT (Text, LEN(text)-N) =REPLACE(A2, 1, B2, "") =RIGHT(A2,LEN(A2)-B2)

Select the cells where you have the text. Go to Data > Data Tools > Text to Columns. In the Text to Column Wizard Step 1, select Delimited and press Next. In Step 2, check the Other option and enter @ in the box right to it.

3. If you want to remove the first nth characters in a string you just change the -4 to whatever number of characters you want to remove. For example, if you want to remove the first 3 characters of a string then simply change the -4 to -3. If you want to remove the first 2 characters then change it to - 2 and so on.
