Together, this mix of intensity, culture systems, species, farming systems and different phase of culture create an extreme diverse collection of aquaculture systems and technologies.

Dissolved waste occurs in many forms: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate (i.e.; nitrogen), phosphorus and organic matter. Ammonia, which is excreted through the gills, is the most toxic form 2 Page 5 of nitrogen when in the un-ionized form.

Ammonia is the major waste generated by fish. Ammonia is majorly excreted through gills. Processed or treated fish waste can be used as animal feed, biodiesel/biogas, soil fertilizer etc.

Fish waste may include, but is not limited to, particles of flesh, skin, bones, entrails, shells or liquid stick water. Fish wastes degrade rapidly in warm temperatures. If not appropriately stored or managed, fish wastes create aesthetic problems and strong odors as a result of bacterial decomposition.
