If it has been more than twelve calendar months since you last completed the tasks to keep instrument current, you now need an Instrument Proficiency Check, or IPC. Like a flight review, an IPC is not a pass/fail situation.

An effective IPC should consist of a ground, simulator, and flight segment to be effective. Airman Decision-Making skills should be discussed and reinforced throughout the IPC.

If you let another six months pass, you need an IPC. In other words, if it's been six months since you did the six approaches, and another six months pass (12 months total) – it's Instrument Proficiency Check time.

Instrument Rating Renewal (Instrument Proficiency Check) The IPC involves a ground component, flight under the IFR, and simulator component with a Flight Examiner, during which you need to demonstrate competency on the instrument approaches and knowledge relevant to your instrument rating.

The Pilot Proficiency check is a full checkride test that includes the exact same maneuvers as the initial rating as the checkride. This means that a typical examination covers all the aeronautical knowledge areas, tasks required for the specific type of rating, as well as areas of operation.
