Background: A volar locking plate (VLP) is the most frequently used form of implant used for open reduction and internal fixation of distal radius fractures.

The 2.4 mm Variable Angle LCP® Volar Rim Distal Radius Plate is part of the 2.4 mm Variable Angle LCP Distal Radius System. The plates are anatomically contoured and allow buttressing of distal fragments, and are designed to address complex intra-articular and extra-articular distal radius fractures.

The volar rim of the distal radius is the only part of the articular surface that provides support against volar carpal translation. These fragments are inherently unstable, because they are offset palmarly from the radial shaft ( Fig. 1 ).

The DePuy Synthes 2.4 mm LCP® Distal Radius System is a comprehensive plating system to address a variety of fracture patterns. With anatomically shaped plates featuring fixed-angle support and Combi holes, the treatment of dorsal and volar distal radius fractures is achieved.

MIO – insertion of condylar locking compression plate (VA-LCP) as neutralization plate.

It is inserted via a volar approach and is placed over the watershed line as it is pre-contoured to fit the volar rim of the distal radius. The edges of the plate are designed to provide a smooth surface against which the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor pollicis longus tendons may glide with minimal irritation.

A volar plate injury is commonly called a jammed or sprained finger. It happens when the finger is bent back or to the side too far (hyperextended). The middle joint in a finger has 3 ligaments that wrap around it to move and support it. Ligaments are tissues that connect 2 bones together.

The radial plate should be positioned 1.0 cm proximal to the tip of the radial styloid along the midline of the distal radius in the sagittal plane.
