Do local trucks need IFTA? Local trucks operating exclusively within a single jurisdiction typically do not need to file IFTA. IFTA is primarily for commercial vehicles that travel across multiple jurisdictions, such as interstate or international carriers.

IFTA is an agreement among U.S. states and provinces in Canada that simplifies the reporting of fuel use taxes by interstate motor carriers who operate in two or more member states or provinces.

Apportioned plates are the type of plate you receive when you register under the IRP. They are used for trucking businesses that plan to travel in more than two jurisdictions under the IRP and exceed a certain weight limit. Commercial plates are a type of registration for trucks staying in one state.

The International Registration Plan (IRP) is an option for registering commercial vehicles that allows for interstate operation under a single registration plate and registration certificate (cab card) issued by your “base” state.

The goal of the IRP audit is to confirm the distance data reported on the annual renewal application. The goal of the IFTA audit is to confirm the distance, fuel, and miles per gallon (MPG) reported on the fuel tax forms.

Heavy vehicle owners and operators operating in Canada or the United States must comply with the IFTA and IRP.

In the same way that the IRP is set up to compensate states and provinces based on where you travel, the IFTA is designed to compensate states based on the number of miles your trucks travel within the state. Despite its name, the IFTA doesn't enforce fees based on where you purchased your fuel.

For all IRP/IFTA questions, please contact the office of Motor Carrier Services here or call (334) 242-9000, choose option 4.
