Community Protective Factors Communities where families have access to economic and financial help. Communities where families have access to medical care and mental health services. Communities with access to safe, stable housing. Communities where families have access to nurturing and safe childcare.

Five Protective Factors are the foundation of the Strengthening Families Approach: parental resilience, social connections, concrete support in times of need, knowledge of parenting and child development, and social and emotional competence of children.

Put simply, they are the strengths that help to buffer and support families. Examples of protective factors include community support, parenting competencies, and economic opportunities. Protective factors help ensure that children and youth function well at home, in school, at work, and in the community.

Protective factors are characteristics associated with a lower likelihood of negative outcomes or that reduce a risk factor's impact. Protective factors may be seen as positive countering events. Some risk and protective factors are fixed: they don't change over time.

The Protective Factors Survey (PFS) is a 20-item measure designed for use with caregivers receiving child maltreatment prevention services such as home visiting, parent education, and family support. It is a pre-post survey completed by the program participants, usually parents or caregivers.
