Benching or sloping of the soil – One of the simplest methods to protect trenching workers, benching is when the walls of the excavation are either sloped or benched, depending on the type of soil in place at the site. As the soil and its stability are reduced, so is the angle at which the trench is sloped.

Protective systems for trench safety include sloping, shoring, shielding, and benching. They are used when soil conditions and the depth of the trench present a hazard to workers.

Shoring. This involves using support systems such as hydraulic cylinders to create a barrier between the workers and the trench walls. Shielding. This method uses systems such as trench boxes (use plates used to brace the sides of the trench) to protect workers from cave-ins.

OSHA requires employers to provide ladders, steps, ramps, or other safe means of egress for workers working in trench excavations 4 feet (1.22 meters) or deeper. The means of egress must be located so as not to require workers to travel more than 25 feet (7.62 meters) laterally within the trench.

Trench boxes can be used to protect workers in cases of cave-ins, but not to shore up or support trench walls. They can support trench walls if the space between the box and the trench wall is backfilled with soil and compacted properly. Otherwise, a cave-in or collapse may cause the trench box to tilt or turn over.

Workers can't remain in the trench box when it's being installed, taken out or moved vertically. People working in a trench box must have access to a ladder or other means of egress. The ladder must be secured and located within 25 lateral feet of all workers, and it must extend beyond the top of the trench by 3 feet.

Shielding- protects workers by using trench boxes or other types of supports to prevent soil cave-ins. Combination- using more than one type of protective system at the same time.
