Modal verbs (modals) are verbs that add the meaning of logical possibility, ability, necessity, and permission to verbs, which have a degree of strength from stronger to weaker. Modals come before infinitive verbs and the “to” is removed.

A modal verb (also called a modal auxiliary verb) is used along with a main verb to express possibility, ability, permission, or necessity. For example, in the statement “you must leave,” “must” is a modal verb indicating that it's necessary for the subject (“you”) to perform the action of the verb (“leave”).

These are verbs that indicate likelihood, ability, permission or obligation. Words like: can/could, may/might, will/would, shall/should and must.

A modal verb is a kind of auxiliary verb that is used to express modalities (the states or 'modes' in which a thing exists) such as possibility, ability, prohibition and necessity. Some common examples of modal verbs include should, must, will, might and could.

The modal auxiliaries are can, could, may, might, ought to, shall, should, will, would. They never act as main verbs. They always help the main verbs. They are called modal auxiliaries or modals.

 Modals do not change form.  Modals never end in “s” even in 3rd person singular  Use “not” to make modal verbs negative.  Don't use double modals.  Modals lack past tense forms, except could and would which serve as the past of can and will.

Modal verbs (modals) are verbs that add the meaning of logical possibility, ability, necessity, and permission to verbs, which have a degree of strength from stronger to weaker. Modals come before infinitive verbs and the “to” is removed.

- Use the modal verb in its current form. Don't alter its form by transforming it into the present, future, or past. - After a modal, use the verb's basic form. Use "to" or the full infinitive verb "to" instead.

The principal English modal verbs are can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, and must. Certain other verbs are sometimes classed as modals; these include ought, had better, and (in certain uses) dare and need.

 Modals lack past tense forms, except could and would which serve as the past of can and will. Can present ability – I can ride a bike. opportunity – She can help you learn to ride a bike, when she is finished studying. permission – Can I try to ride the bike now?
