There are two types of ossification: intramembranous and endochondral.

The process of bone formation is called osteogenesis or ossification. After progenitor cells form osteoblastic lines, they proceed with three stages of development of cell differentiation, called proliferation, maturation of matrix, and mineralization.

There are two processes resulting in the formation of normal, healthy bone tissue: Intramembranous ossification is the direct laying down of bone into the primitive connective tissue (mesenchyme), while endochondral ossification involves cartilage as a precursor.

1 – Intramembranous Ossification: Intramembranous ossification follows four steps. (a) Mesenchymal cells group into clusters, differentiate into osteoblasts, and ossification centers form. (b) Secreted osteoid traps osteoblasts, which then become osteocytes.

Ossification centers are formed when osteoid mesenchymal cells cluster and become osteoblasts. Osteoid is secreted. Woven bone is formed osteoid is laid down around blood vessels, resulting in trabeculae. ~outer layer of woven bone forms periosteum. Lamellar bone replaces woven bone, and red marrow appears.

Endochondral ossification can be divided into five stages: commitment, compaction, proliferation, growth, and finally, chondrocyte death and the generation of new bone. Phases 1 and 2: commitment and compaction.

Bone ossification, or osteogenesis, is the process of bone formation. This process begins between the sixth and seventh weeks of embryonic development and continues until about age twenty-five; although this varies slightly based on the individual.
