▪ What is the unseen poetry question about? It is about comparing the poets' ideas and language in two short modern poems you haven't seen before. Examiners are interested in what you make of the poems and how they affect you. You can revise this question by reading through class notes and practising past questions.

Students will study one cluster of poems taken from the AQA poetry anthology, Poems Past and Present. There is a choice of three clusters, each containing 15 poems. The poems in each cluster are thematically linked and were written between 1789 and the present day.

In this course, Professor John McRae (University of Nottingham) explores the fifteen poems that make up the 'Power and Conflict' cluster for GCSE English Literature (AQA). Each poem is read in detail, with a short commentary highlighting aspects of language, style, themes, motifs, and so on.

The unseen prose and poetry as the name implies are the ones the students have never seen before in the course of their studies.

The Charge of the Light Brigade – Alfred Lord Tennyson. Exposure – Wilfred Owen. Storm on the Island – Seamus Heaney.

Read the poem all the way through once or twice without making any annotations. Once you feel that you have a grasp of the poem and it's subject, read it through stanza by stanza and underline/annotate any poetic techniques which you immediately recognise. For example, metaphors, similes, enjambment or alliteration.
