Vision screening is a simple test of your vision that can detect problems early. An eye exam is a detailed check of your eyes and eye health. About one in four children in the U.S. have an undiagnosed or untreated vision problem. Poor vision and blindness are frequent in older people, too.

A vision screening is a brief test that mainly checks how well you can see things up close and far away. It's also called an eye test. The test usually involves reading letters on an eye chart. A vision screening is a quick way to find out if you need a comprehensive (complete) eye exam.

A vision screening may also include vision testing of your eye's reaction to light, muscle coordination, or by viewing simple images and graphs that could reveal colorblindness or other hidden problems. The vision testing you take to get your driver's license is actually an example of a vision screening.

To take the test, you usually stand 20 feet from the chart and cover one eye. You read the letters one row at a time until you get to a row with letters that are too small for you to see. Each eye is tested separately. Some eye charts use a capital E that points in different directions.

Compared to vision screenings, comprehensive eye exams are much more thorough and far better at diagnosing vision issues. Both children and adults can pass school vision screenings or other eye tests but still have an underlying vision problem go undetected.

There are three different types of eye exams, including a comprehensive eye exam, a routine eye exam, and a contact lens exam. Depending on when your last appointment was and the kind of vision correction you need, the optometrist may use a different exam.

Individuals with visual acuity poorer than 20/40 with both eyes may drive with a daylight-only restriction. If you do need corrective lenses you must wear them at all times when driving. In order to hold a driver's license in PA you must also meet field of vision requirements.

The mission of the Pennsylvania Department of Health is to promote healthy behaviors, prevent injury and disease, and to assure the safe delivery of quality health care for all people in Pennsylvania.
