Modern technology has reduced the need for anchors but hasn't completely eliminated it. Many modern cruise ships have 'dynamic positioning' meaning that they use propulsion and thrusters instead of anchors to maintain a steady position.

Types of Anchors. We have sorted most of the common anchors into five major categories: The Hook, Plough, Fluke, Claw and Scoop.

Why We Need Anchors. The purpose of an anchor is to keep a ship safe and secure at a desired location or to help control the ship during bad weather. However, to accomplish these vital purposes, just having an anchor is not enough. The anchor must be solid, dependable, and used properly at the right time and place.

Did you know there's no law requiring boats to keep an anchor on board? Local tow boat captains say they're seeing more disabled boats adrift on the water as they wait for help. Cheryl Costello reports, a vessel without an anchor risks drifting into fast-moving boat traffic or running aground.

Anchor and chain loss can often lead to collisions and grounding, which can result in additional damage to a vessel. Adding to the costs of anchor loss is the increasingly common requirement from port authorities that lost anchors are recovered.

The right to anchor a vessel is part of the common law right of navigation, which allows vessels to anchor temporarily and for a reasonable period of time in any appropriate location, unless specifically prohibited by statute or regulation.

Head into the wind or current. Reduce speed and reverse the engine. When the boat starts to make a slight sternway through the water, lower - do not throw - the anchor. After you've let about a third of your line out, tug the anchor line to see how firmly it's set, and then continue to release the rode.

So the simple tips are, make sure have enough chain, as a bare minimum that's at least one boat length. Let out enough rope, remember three times the amount of rope to the depth of water you are in. Slowly reverse off the spot as the anchor is deployed.
