§ 25.969 Fuel tank expansion space. Each fuel tank must have an expansion space of not less than 2 percent of the tank capacity.

This paragraph requires that a fire extinguisher be located "...not less than 25 feet, nor more than 75 feet, from any flammable liquid storage area located outside." A fire extinguisher stored 20 feet away from the diesel fuel storage area would not be in compliance with this requirement.

Individually and together, the members of the fuel-tank entry crew must be aware of the following requirements for safe working conditions: Communication. Respiratory protection. Ventilation and air monitoring. Electrically powered equipment. Airplane damage considerations.

Although heat is not required for rivet repairs, the tank should be purged with an inert gas, as described next, to prevent ignition of fuel vapors by any sparks such as from the use of tools. The purging of fuel tanks with an inert gas is an acceptable procedure.

Within two years, all new aircraft must include technology designed to significantly reduce the risk of center fuel tank fires as part of a final rule announced Wednesday by U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters.

(a) Each fuel tank must be able to withstand, without failure, the vibration, inertia, fluid, and structural loads to which it may be subjected in operation. (b) Each fuel tank of 10 gallons or greater capacity must have internal baffles, or must have external support to resist surging.

(c) Each fuel tank must be separated from the engine compartment by a firewall. At least one-half inch of clear airspace must be provided between the tank and the firewall.

OSHA 1910.106 (b)(2)(ii)(a) requires a minimum separation of three feet for flammable storage tanks. Tanks should not be closer than 25 feet from any building, per best practice recommendations followed by West Bend Mutual Insurance Company.
