Tattoos ensure that each horse is who it is supposed to be. Lip tattoos are applied to the gum of the inside of the upper lip and are encoded with numbers and a letter, which represent both the individual horse and the year of its birth. Once inked, the technician presses the pins into the gum tissue.

Tattoos, brands, freeze marks, scars, and pin-firing marks are the most common examples. The location and shape of these marks are sometimes also described as markings. On plain- colored horses without natural white markings, these features can be very useful along with hair whorls to identify a horse.

The identifying number signifies the order in which horses born in the same foaling season were branded with the same stock brand. If a number of horses are being branded with the same Stock Brand and Foaling Season Number “3”, the horses would be branded 1 over 3, 2 over 3, 3 over 3, etc.

For Thoroughbreds, the tattoos start with a letter (the letter represent the year the horse was born) followed by four or five unique numbers. Usually racing Quarter Horses have tattoos with four of five numbers, followed by a letter. Arabians and Appaloosas are numbers (end of the registration number).

All racehorses are required to have a lip tattoo for identification purposes prior to racing. Any of the racing breeds can have a lip tattoo if they were raced. This tattoo positively identifies the horse and its owner through the horse's registration papers.

The Thoroughbred's tattoo consists of a letter, corresponding to the horse's year of birth, and four or five numbers. Tattoo Identification Services assists owners and agents in the identification of Thoroughbreds based upon what The Jockey Club records indicate to be the correct tattoo for a particular horse.

Ownership of a horse may be established in a Bill of Sale, a written agreement between the seller and buyer (or agents such as trainers or bloodstock agents) or by contract construction. Many states now require the use of a written Bill of Sale in connection with most horse sales.

A brand is filed based upon its first letter or character. Brands are read from left to right, top to bottom, or outside to inside. Brands that contain letters, numbers or characters having rafters, quarter circles, or bars above or below are listed under the letter, number or character category.
