Dual energy CT scans are a relatively new form of CT scanning that use separate X-ray energies to make images. Images can be generated: by the simultaneous use of two X-ray tubes ('dual source'); by using an X-ray detector with separate layers to detect two different energy ranges ('dual layer'); or.

A dual source CT (DSCT) is a CT system with two x-ray tubes and two detectors at an angle of approximately 90°. Both measurement systems acquire CT scan data simultaneously at the same anatomical level of the patient (same z-position).

Thus, dual-energy CT can be defined as the use of attenuation measurements acquired with different energy spectra, along with use of the known changes in attenuation between the two spectra, to differentiate and quantify material composition.

Standard computed tomography (CT) scanners use normal X-rays to make cross-sectional 'slice-like' pictures or images of the body (see InsideRadiology: Computed Tomography). A dual energy CT scanner is fairly new technology that uses both the normal X-ray and also a second less powerful X-ray to make the images.

Dual-energy CT permits a variety of image reconstructions for the de- piction and characterization of vascular disease. Techniques include visualization of low– and high–peak-kilovoltage spectra image datasets and also material-specific reconstructions combining both low– and high–peak-kilovoltage data.
