Tuition Reimbursement as a Fringe Benefit As stated above, any amount of tuition reimbursement that exceeds $5,250 is considered a fringe benefit of the job, and the employee will have to pay taxes on that amount.

Employers require tuition reimbursement payback agreements to avoid training employees who use their education to get a new job working elsewhere. Companies legally protect themselves by making employees pay back reimbursements if the employee leaves the company within a specific time frame of completing the education.

Benefits over $5,250 If your employer pays more than $5,250 for educational benefits for you during the year, you must generally pay tax on the amount over $5,250. Your employer should include in your wages (Form W-2, box 1) the amount that you must include in income.

For a student loan to qualify for the deduction, you must have used the loan to pay higher education expenses for yourself or for one of your dependents (with only a couple of exceptions). To calculate your exact deduction, you can use the Student Loan Interest Deduction Worksheet that the IRS provides.

This includes undergraduate and graduate-level courses. Anything above $5,250 is generally considered as taxable income. However, there are some exemptions. If you receive assistance over $5,250 it is excluded from your income if the education is a qualified, working-condition, fringe benefit.
