Sodium Ferrocyanide (also known as tetrasodium hexacyanoferrate) is a sodium-iron compound used as an anti-caking agent, electroplating additive, and as a petroleum refining reagent.

In fact, potassium ferrocyanide (INS no. 536) as well as sodium and calcium ferrocyanides (535 and 538) can be used as anticaking agents (substances that prevent powdered and granulated ingredients from lumping) in salt under Codex General Standard for Food Additives.

Sodium ferrocyanide has a low toxicity, as its LD50 (50% lethal dose) in rats is 1600 to 3200 mg/kg body weight when administered orally.

Some commercial varieties of salt have small amounts of sodium ferrocyanide added to prevent the caking (or clumping) that can occur under various conditions.

It is a yellow crystalline solid that is soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol. The yellow color is the color of ferrocyanide anion.

Ferrocyanide is an odorless yellow solid that mixes with water and is used mainly as an anticaking agent. In this way, it is often added to food grade salt to prevent lumping as well as make sure it's dispensed smoothly through a salt shaker.
