The Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale was designed by W.W. Zung to assess the level of depression for patients diagnosed with depressive disorder. The Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale is a short self-administered survey to quantify the depressed status of a patient.

The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) is the most widely used self-rating scale, developed in 1961 by Aaron Beck based on symptoms he observed to be common among depressed patients. The BDI consists of 21 items of emotional, behavioral, and somatic symptoms that takes 5–10 minutes to administer.

Items are on a one to four scale; raw scores are converted into a percentage by dividing the sum of all questions by 0.80. Conventional cutoffs are 25–43 for no depression, 50–59 for mild to moderate depression, 60–69 for moderate to severe depression, and 70 or over for severe depression (Zung, 1967).

Zung self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) Items include both negative and positive (e.g., “I fall asleep easily and get a good night's sleep.”) experiences, with the latter being reverse scored. Raw scale scores for the SAS range from 20 to 80. The SAS has satisfactory psychometric properties.
