It is best to collect the sample first thing in the morning. 3) Each sample must be one liter in volume and must contain the first water drawn from the faucet. 4) Remove the cap from the one-liter sample bottle, place the container directly below the faucet and gently open the cold-water tap.

Wear gloves and eye protection when collecting samples. Rinse the bottle and cap three times with sample water and fill the bottle to within one to two inches from the top. Place the sample into a cooler with ice for immediate delivery or shipment to the laboratory. Sterile 125 or 150 mL plastic bottles must be used.

Samples must be collected in one-liter wide mouth bottles and sample collectors shall not be instructed to remove aerators and should not conduct flushing prior to stagnation for sampling. The water must be inactive/untouched for a minimum of 6 hours prior to sampling.

Open the tap fully and let water run for 3-4 minutes to clear the service line. o If sampling from a mixing faucet (Hot and Cold), remove faucet attachments (aerators etc.), run Hot water for 2 minutes and Cold for 2-3 minutes. o Disinfect the faucet inside and out with a 10% bleach solution.

Place the opened sample bottle below the faucet and open the cold water tap as you would do to fill a glass of water. Fill the sample bottle to the shoulder and turn off the water. Note: 1L or 1000mL plastic container is required and a wide mouth container is preferred by USEPA for Lead and Copper sampling.

Commonly used devices include electric submersible pumps, bailers, suction-lift pumps, and positive displacement bladder pumps. Bailers are often used to both purge and sample small diameter shallow wells.
