The canopy is composed of tall deciduous trees—oak, hickory, tuliptree, maple, beech, and others. White pine and other conifers are scattered throughout the forest. The middle layer is made up of small trees, shrubs, and vines. On the forest floor, wildflowers, ferns, sedges, moss, other plants, and lichen thrive.

Primary tropical rainforest is vertically divided into at least five layers: the overstory, the canopy, the understory, the shrub layer, and the forest floor. Each layer has its own unique plant and animal species interacting with the ecosystem around them.

The main layers of all forest types are the forest floor, the understory, and the canopy. The emergent layer, above the canopy, exists in tropical rainforests.

Speaking of growth, there are two kinds: expansion of roots and stems, and progressive thickening of tissue. And unlike humans and animals, trees only produce new cells in limited places called meristems. Left alone, most trees can grow for centuries, gnarled bark slowly thickening and branches twining towards the sky.

The word forest broadly describes an area that has a large number of trees. There are three general types of forest that exist: temperate, tropical, and boreal. Experts estimate that these forests cover approximately one-third of Earth's surface. Temperate forests are found across eastern North America and Eurasia.

Forests are ecosystems characterized by a dominance of tree cover and they contain a variety of other organisms (e.g., other plants, animals). Forests differ in composition and structure. These are both affected by biotic (e.g., animals, plants, humans) and abiotic (e.g., soil moisture, sunlight, climate) factors.
