INSTRUCTIONS – SECURE CERTIFICATE OF INDIAN STATUS (SCIS)

On its website, the federal government says waiting times for simple cases are between six and eight months, and, in complex cases, up to two years, though government officials say simple cases often are processed in a matter of weeks, not months.

Eligibility is based on descent in one's family. A person may be eligible for status if at least one parent is, was or was entitled to be registered as 6(1). A person is also eligible if two parents are registered as 6(2).

APPLICATION FOR ALREADY REGISTERED PERSONS. ADULTS (16 OR OLDER), CHILDREN (15 OR YOUNGER) AND DEPENDENT ADULTS. General information. Note: SCIS stands for Secure Certificate of Indian Status.

In 2009, Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) began to issue the secure status card to help protect registered persons from identity theft. ISC encourages registered persons to apply for the secure status card, which has a number of security features that the status card doesn't have.
