For the first few weeks after your surgery, you may have: Bruising and swelling around your eye socket. Watery or pink-colored drainage (leftover blood and tears) A “scratchy” feeling in your eye socket.

Enucleation is generally the procedure used if the eye is being removed to treat an intraocular tumor, severe infection, or to reduce the risk of developing a severe autoimmune condition (called sympathetic ophthalmia) following trauma to the eye.

You should not lift more than 10 pounds, strain, or rub your eye for at least 14 days after surgery. The enucleation patient should also not take aspirin or other blood thinners unless your internist says it is required. You will need to be examined at 5-7 days, 1 month and every 6 months after surgery.

What is enucleation? An enucleation operation is where the eye ball is removed. The eyelids, eyelashes, eyebrows and surrounding skin will be left as they are. The eyeball is set inside the protective bony orbit.

The main indications for enucleation are trauma, painful eye, a blind eye, which is unsightly, intraocular malignancy, and as part of eye donation. Alternatives such as evisceration or exenteration can be considered ing to the underlying diagnosis and condition of the eye.

There are two approaches for enucleation surgery: transconjunctival (also referred to as subconjunctival) and transpalpebral.

Reduced growth of socket. Superior sulcus deformity (a sunken appearance) Scarring of the socket. Exposure, extrusion and loss of the orbital implant.
