The Postal Service offers generous annual (vacation) and sick leave – 13 days of annual leave per year for the first 3 years, increasing to 20 days per year after 3 years of service, and to 26 days per year after 15 years of service.

Form 3971 refers to Request for or Notification of Absence developed and released by the U.S. Postal Service. The form is designed for employees, employers or supervisors. Form 3971 is first given to the employee to fill out and then submitted to the supervisor for approval.

665.42 Absence Without Permission Employees who fail to report for duty on scheduled days, including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, are considered absent without leave except in cases where actual emergencies prevent them from obtaining permission in advance.
