Virginia requires all tradesmen to obtain a license before any bidding or work can take place. The state recognizes three different types of Electrical licenses. An Electrical Contractor license is used in combination with a valid Virginia Contractors license class A, B, or C.

DPOR issues state credentials—licenses, certificates or registrations—to those qualified to practice in regulated professions. We protect the public by verifying minimum competency, investigating complaints, and upholding professional compliance with state law and regulations.

Virginia Electrical License Reciprocity Alabama. Kentucky. Maryland. West Virginia. North Carolina.

Anyone associated with a project can file an application for a permit; however, the Code of Virginia requires that we issue a permit only when a properly licensed contractor is identified for the project. State code provides for some exemptions from the requirement to have a licensed contractor.

A 'non-qualified' person can still carry out notifiable electrical work as long as Building Control are informed – but if you fail to do this and the work is found to be unsafe, it can lead to a hefty fine.

Minor electrical work is what you can carry out in your own home. These are jobs such as: Adding socket outlets to an existing circuit. Installing outside sockets from an existing circuit....This includes such things as: Full house rewire. Fuse box replacement. Work carried out in a special location. Wiring a new circuit.

Seven or more years of experience and 40 hours of formal vocational training. An associate's degree or certificate of completion from at least a two-year program in an electrician-related field from an accredited community college or technical school and two years of practical experience.

You only need a license in Virginia if you plan to perform certain types of jobs that go beyond the scope of minor repairs. If your work will become a finished part of the structure (such as replacing flooring in an entire room) and the total for the project exceeds $1,000, you must have a general contractor license.
