What is IAPT? Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services provide evidence-based psychological therapies to people with anxiety disorders and depression.

As clinical advisors who have worked on expanding psychological therapies across our careers, we are delighted that Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) services are being renamed as NHS Talking Therapies, for anxiety and depression, following a public consultation.

1.3 What are IAPT services? IAPT services provide evidence-based treatments for people with depression and anxiety disorders, and comorbid long-term physical health conditions (LTCs) or medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) (when integrated with physical healthcare pathwaysc).

Your referral will be screened by a therapist within 7 to 14 days of receipt. Please note, in some instances this may take longer.

IAPT services are provided directly by the NHS, as well as by third sector providers commissioned by the NHS.

Self-referral often includes services for drug and alcohol problems, as well as antenatal care and improving access to psychological therapies (IAPT). You can register for most of them online. In some cases you refer yourself by phoning rather than emailing or by completing an online form.

So what level of stepped care does IAPT offer? The initial step will offer help in recognition and diagnosis of a person's OCD, and provide guided self-help materials.

IAPT stands for Improving Access to Psychological Therapy and is an NHS service designed to offer short-term psychological therapies to people suffering from anxiety, depression and stress. IAPT may also work with people who suffer from panic disorder, simple phobia, OCD or PTSD.
