Turbinate hypertrophy is caused when the mucosa becomes enlarged or swollen. This can be chronic or acute and can be caused by conditions including: Hormonal changes.

What Is Turbinate Hypertrophy? Turbinate hypertrophy, inferior turbinate hypertrophy, and nasal turbinate hypertrophy are all descriptions of a similar condition where the tissue on the lateral (outside) walls of the nose are too large, causing nasal obstruction.

Turbinate hypertrophy occurs when either the middle or the inferior nasal turbinates become enlarged because approximately half of all of the air flow passes between these two. This means that when they become enlarged, it is possible for the airflow to be blocked or obstructed.

Under Diagnostic Code 6523, a 10 percent evaluation is warranted for bacterial rhinitis with permanent hypertrophy of turbinates and with greater than 50-percent obstruction of nasal passage on both sides or complete obstruction on one side. 38 C.F.R. § 4.97.

To establish direct service connection for chronic sinusitis, veterans must demonstrate the following three elements: A current diagnosis by a medical professional; An in-service event, injury, or illness; and. A medical nexus linking the current diagnosis of chronic sinusitis to the in-service occurrence.

Allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory disease of the lining of the nose. The latter is characterized by turbinate hypertrophy with congestion, runny nose (rhinorrhea), sneezing, itching of the nose or throat, or by a combination of these symptoms.
