Multimodal Transport Document/ Combined Transport Document A multimodal Transport Document or Combined Transport Document is a type of Through Bill of Lading that involves a minimum of two different modes of transport, land or ocean. However, the modes of transportation can be anything from freight boats to air.

There are usually two types of bill of lading, the House Bill of Lading and the Master Bill of Lading. An ocean bill of lading indicates a particular carrier through which the goods have been placed to their final destination and the conditions for transporting the shipment to its final destination.

In a Multimodal Shipment, the shipper has one contract of carriage, which covers all modes of transport from origin to destination, whether that is a door-to-port, port-to-door or door-to-door. This equates to one carrier for a one journey.

Using a multimodal TMS eliminates the hassle of tracking various bills of lading, invoices to the respective carrier, as well as determining when a single-carrier multimodal shipment would benefit from a transition to another carrier and effectively become intermodal.

Bill of lading can be used port to port sea shipments only. Multimodal bill of lading, on the other hand, can be used with shipments covering more than one modes of transport. Bill of lading is a negotiable transport document, if it is issued "to order".
