Arch are structurally very stable in compression, as loads are relatively evenly balanced through their form. A vault is a structural form composed of a series of arches, typically found in the construction of ceilings or roofs.

Arches always generate the section of vaulted structures. Vaults are generated by the projection of the arch section on a plan, which is most of the time horizontal. Domes are basically shaped by the rotation of the arch section around a vertical axis. They can be built on circular or quadrangular plans.

Arches were known in ancient Egypt and Greece but were considered unsuitable for monumental architecture and seldom used. The Romans, by contrast, used the semicircular arch in bridges, aqueducts, and large-scale architecture.

Roman architecture differed fundamentally from this tradition because of the discovery, experimentation and exploitation of concrete, arches and vaulting (a good example of this is the Pantheon, c. 125 C.E.).

The real vault construction with radially joined stones was already known to the Egyptians and Assyrians and was introduced into the building practice of the West by the Etruscans. The Romans in particular developed vault construction further and built barrel, cross and dome vaults.

Domes, like vaults, evolved from the arch, for in their simplest form they may be thought of as a continuous series of arches, with the same centre. Therefore, the dome exerts thrusts all around its perimeter, and the earliest monumental examples required heavy walls.

Rounded, i. e. semicircular, arches were commonly used for ancient arches that were constructed of heavy masonry. Ancient Roman builders relied heavily on the rounded arch to span great lengths. Several rounded arches that are constructed in-line and end-to-end in a series form an arcade, e.g. in Roman aqueducts.

The Romans used arches with circular tops, called rounded arches, which were made of stone.
