During a lighter seat, or two-point position, forces on the horse's back were even less. The general message here is that sitting trot creates the most impact and force on the horse's back, while posting—and lighter seat variations—create much less. And, yes, Western disciplines should post the trot as well!

Remember in a Prelim test you can choose whether to use rising or sitting trot for your trot movements, young or very inexperienced horses often find it easier to maintain balance in rising trot on a circle or round corners.

Prelim – Prelim sees the combination move up to including working canter in their tests. The canter work will be on 20m circles and straight lines. The harder Prelim tests include some changes of rein in canter, but no counter-canter.

Preliminary – Test 1A – Introduces working trot, working canter, medium walk, free walk, and 20m circles in trot and canter. Test 2A – Adds stretch circle in a trot. Test 3A – introduces serpentine.

In the Preliminary tests, the rider can sit or rise to the trot, unless otherwise stated — meaning you have the choice. Roger recommends that for most horses, you are much better off going rising.

Introductory is the easiest level where you perform your test in walk and trot. Canter comes in at Prelim and at Novice, lengthened strides come. Elementary starts lateral work and the difficulty steps up for Medium. Flying changes come in for Advanced Medium before you hit the 'advanced' levels.

Training Level and First Level tests state that “All trot work may be ridden sitting or rising, unless stated.” Note that in certain tests below Second Level, some specific movements do require rising trot, such as the stretchy trot that appears at the end of First Level, Test 2.
