Rupture disks are commonly used in petrochemical, aerospace, aviation, defense, medical, railroad, nuclear, chemical, pharmaceutical, food processing and oil field applications.

When in use, the rupture disc provides a superior process seal, therefore reducing fugitive emissions. Valves re-close after an over-pressure event, thus saving process media and allowing operation to continue until the bursting disc can be replaced.

As per ASME Code, the Standard Rupture Disc is designed with a burst tolerance of ±2 psig (0,138 barg) for pressures up to and including 40 psig (2,76 barg) and ±5% for burst pressures above 40 psig (2,76 barg).

A rupture disc is an emergency relief device consisting of a thin metal diaphragm carefully designed to rupture at a predetermined pressure. The obvious difference between a relief or safety valve and a rupture disc is that the valve reseats and the disc does not.

Rupture disks are used where instantaneous and full opening of a pressure relief device is required. These devices are also utilized where "zero" leak-age is required of a relief device. These devices can also be used in series as "quick opening" valves.

The three basic types of pressure-relief valves are conventional spring loaded, balanced spring loaded, and the pilot operated. Conventional spring loaded. In the conventional spring-loaded valve (Fig. ... Balanced spring-loaded. ... Pilot operated.

Rupture discs are safety devices with a defined breaking point, which respond to a specific pressure and are used for pressure relief in the most diverse range of applications. They are used to protect against overpressure or vacuum within a process, for the protection of man, environment and machine.

Maintenance frequency. While rupture disc manufacturers would like to recommend replacement of every rupture disc every year, that is not a realistic expectation. As shutdowns for maintenance activities are stretched further and further apart, it is not unusual to expect 3 to 5 years of service from the rupture disc.
