How to fill out the Bitterness Ratio online

The Bitterness Ratio is an essential document for homebrewers, providing a detailed analysis of various beer styles and their bitterness levels. This guide will help you navigate the online process of completing the Bitterness Ratio form to ensure accurate and comprehensive results.

Follow the steps to successfully complete the Bitterness Ratio form.

  1. Click the ‘Get Form’ button to access the Bitterness Ratio document and open it for further processing.
  2. Begin by filling in the name of the beer style you are analyzing in the designated field. Ensure that the name corresponds with the established categories.
  3. Enter the minimum original gravity (OG) reading in the respective field. This measurement is crucial for determining the potential alcohol content of the beer.
  4. Next, input the maximum original gravity (OG) reading. This will help establish a range for your beer style.
  5. Proceed to fill in the minimum international bitterness units (IBU), which gauge the bitterness of your beer based on hop content.
  6. Then, input the maximum international bitterness units (IBU) to complete the bitterness range.
  7. Fill in the minimum bitterness-to-gravity ratio (BU:GU). This value indicates the balance between the bitterness from hops and the gravity from malt.
  8. Next, enter the maximum bitterness-to-gravity ratio (BU:GU) to further refine your beer’s profile.
  9. Lastly, input the average bitterness-to-gravity ratio (BU:GU), summarizing the overall bitterness balance of the beer.
  10. Once all fields are accurately completed, you can save your changes. Choose to download, print, or share the form as needed.

The measure, determined by simply dividing the number of IBUs in a beer by the number of gravity units, provides a rough estimate of the balance between hop bitterness and malt sweetness. It is featured in Ray Daniel's Designing Great Beers book where he lists the average bitterness ratio for many popular styles.

Ratio = Bittering Units / Gravity Units Where: Bittering Units are measured in IBUs, and Gravity Units are the fractional portion of the OG multiplied by 1000. So the full formula (including deriving Gravity Units from the OG) could be described as Ratio = IBU / ((OG – 1) * 1000).

Bitterness Units / Gravity Units Ratio To calculate the BU:GU ratio, simply multiply the original gravity by 1000 then subtract 1000 to get the gravity units: (1.050 * 1000)-1000 = 50. Another way to say this is move the decimal place over three spaces and get rid of the “1” on the left.

IBU stands for International Bitterness Units, a scale to gauge the level of a beer's bitterness. More specifically, IBUs measure the parts per million of isohumulone from hops in a beer, which gives beer bitterness.

Generally speaking, beers with IBU of less than 20 display little to no hops presence. Beers with IBU from 20 to 45, the most common range, reveal a mild to pronounced hops presence. Heavily hopped beers with IBU greater than 45 can taste quite bitter.

A traditional alternative is the International Bitterness Unit (IBU), which basically involves the measurement of light absorbance at 275 nm of an iso-octane extract of acidified beer in a 10 mm cuvette using a spectrophotometer; the IBU is then calculated by multiplying the measured absorbance by 50.

Bitterness in beer is measured on the International Bitterness Units (IBU) scale. This measures the amount of primarily iso-α-acids in a beer which is the acid found in hops that gives beer it's bitter taste. The most widely used method to measure IBU is through spectrophotometry.
