Japan is one of the largest importers of GM foods in the world, with approvals granted for over 200 types of GM foods or food additives.

Japanese law requires labels for products in many categories. Generally, labeling for most imported products is not required at the customs clearance stage but at the point of sale. Consequently, Japanese importers commonly affix a label to an imported product after it has cleared customs.

Japan's current requirements for the types of crops/foods to be labeled remain unchanged - eight crops (soybean, corn, potato, canola, cottonseed, alfalfa, sugar beet and papaya) and 33 processed food items (see JA7121 for a complete list) are subject to mandatory labeling.

Japan has not approved any commodity GM crops to be grown in Japan, but does allow import of agricultural products made from GM crops and food made of imported GM ingredients.
