The traditional method of measuring wastewater flows is through the use of a flume and an ultrasonic flow meter in a flow manhole (concrete vault / manhole or fiberglass packaged metering manhole). The combination is reliable and usually requires low maintenance.

Quality control is a checking test to monitor and ensure the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is at optimum efficiency. The tests are usually carried out on samples collected from specific points or stations in the WWTP. The Influent sample, is collected after the fine screens.

BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) BOD is the traditional, most widely used test to establish concentration of organic matter in wastewater samples (i.e., relative strength).

The physical parameters include color, taste, odor, temperature, turbidity, solids, and electrical conductivity. On the other hand, chemical parameters can include pH, acidity, alkalinity, chlorine, hardness, dissolved oxygen, and biological oxygen demand.

Wastewater Quality Index (WWQI) is a unit less number ranging within 1 to 100 and able to indicate overall characteristic of wastewater. This index helps to have a competent model to optimize the treatment processes.

Parameters that are frequently sampled or monitored for water quality include temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, ORP, and turbidity. However water monitoring may also include measuring total algae, ISEs (ammonia, nitrate, chloride), or laboratory parameters such as BOD, titration, or TOC.

Both the BOD and COD tests are a measure of the relative oxygen-depletion effect of a waste contaminant. Both have been widely adopted as a measure of pollution effect. The BOD test measures the oxygen demand of biodegradable pollutants whereas the COD test measures the oxygen demand of oxidizable pollutants.
