Generally, a CTF exercise requires two teams — a red team that exists to attack, and a blue team whose role is to defend. Although in many organizations a purple team, in which a team of experts takes on the role of both the red team and the blue team, is also common.

Capture The Flag (CTF) is a cyber exercise where participants look for a hidden clue or file, a.k.a. the flag, by using cybersecurity tools. They are very common and no experience is necessary to play. The game gives you a taste of real world cybersecurity with activities often designed by cyber pros.

Capture the Flag (CTF) is a cybersecurity competition that is used as a test of security skills. It was first developed in 1993 at DEFCON, the largest cybersecurity conference in the United States hosted annually in Las Vegas, Nevada. The conference hosts a weekend of cybersecurity competitions including CTF.

What is a Capture the Flag exercise? In a cybersecurity capture-the-flag (CTF) competition, teams use cybersecurity tools and techniques to find hidden clues or “flags” within Cloud Range's virtual cyber range. The team that locates the most flags wins the event.

Participating in a CTF helps developers learn to think creatively about how software can be exploited. Some CTFs provide the opportunity to play offensive, exploiting the same types of vulnerabilities that they are trying to identify and eliminate in their code.

Break into two teams. Choose boundaries for your play area, then designate a divider to separate the two teams' “zones.” You'll also need a designated “jail” (a fire hydrant or tree). Have each team hide their “flag” (the towel or tee). The goal is to find the other team's flag and bring it back to your own territory.

There are three common types of CTFs: Jeopardy, Attack-Defence and mixed.

What skills are needed to play CTFs? Playing capture the flag (CTF) competitions might need some basic prerequisite skills. You will need to have some basic knowledge of networking like subnetting, TCP/IP, routing and similar.
